1969 markierte eine Zeitenwende in der Pop/Rock-Entwicklung. Stilistisch fächerte sich die Szene immer weiter auf - wie niemals zuvor. Neue Bands präsentierten neue Rock-Stile. z.B.: Progressive Rock von King Crimson, Jazz-Rock von Blood Sweat & Tears, Chicago Transit Authority, Frank Zappa und The Flock, Proto-Punkrock von The Stooges, Hard & Heavy Rock von Led Zeppelin, SingerSongwriter-Stil von Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell und Nick Drake, Country-Rock von Johnny Cash und The Flying Burrito Brothers, Underground-Rock von Velvet Underground und Captain Beefheart, Latin-Rock von Santana, "Kraut"-Rock von Can, englischer Folkrock von Pentangle und Fairport Convention, usw.. Die erste Rock-Oper "Tommy" von The Who erscheint. In Woodstock wird erstmals ein breites Spektrum an verschiedensten Rock-Spielarten vor einem Massenpublikum präsentiert. Die Hippie-Ära mit ihrer Love & Peace-Seligkeit endet im Hells Angels-Drama des chaotischen Stones-Konzertes von Altamont.
